A former FBI agent who has been on hundreds of searches said the one at former President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort is unique.

"The issuance of a search warrant in connection with a former president of the United States, that is a very, very unusual occurrence and that may have never happened in modern history," Stuart Kaplan said.

The search warrants are unscheduled, he explained. The FBI will show up when it is ready, and you can't refuse them. The goal is to give people of interest less time to hide evidence that has led to the warrants.

"It's quite shocking, quite surprising, and it's done to catch someone off guard," Kaplan said.

If the reason for the warrant was not found, he said that it may never be public knowledge. If something was found, Kaplan said criminal charges could be filed.

There's no timeline for when more information could be announced.
